1Most of the map, gets none of the clicks
Every "near me" search shows up to 20 businesses on Google Maps. Almost nobody scrolls that far. The three listings in the Map Pack — the pins shown with the map, above the regular website results — absorb nearly half of all clicks from local searches. Everything below that, positions 4 through 10 and beyond, is fighting over what's left.
That's not a small gap. It's the difference between a phone that rings and a listing nobody sees.

2What actually decides who gets the 3 spots
Google ranks the Map Pack using three signals: relevance, distance, and prominence. Distance isn't something you can change. Relevance and prominence are almost entirely under your control — and they're what separate the businesses sitting in the Top 3 from equally good businesses stuck on page 2.
Source: Google Business Profile Help — how results are ranked
- Correct primary and secondary GBP categories — the single biggest relevance signal
- A complete profile: hours, services, attributes, and real photos, not stock images
- A steady stream of recent reviews, with owner replies on all of them
- Consistent business name, address and phone number across every directory
- A keyword-relevant business description written for your actual services
- Regular Google Posts and fresh photo uploads — dormant profiles slide backward
3How to actually move into the Top 3
Audit where you really rank
Search your service plus your area from a phone, logged out of any personal Google account, and note your exact position. Most owners are shocked they aren't where they assumed.
Fix the profile fundamentals
Get categories, services, description and NAP details fully correct and complete. This alone is what most competitors skip, and it's the fastest lever to pull.
Build a review engine, not a review request
A one-off WhatsApp message asking for a review gets ignored. A system that makes leaving one take five seconds — like a QR code at the counter or in the confirmation message — is what keeps reviews compounding every week.
Keep the profile active
Weekly posts, fresh photos and fast replies to questions signal to Google that the business is real and current. Profiles that go quiet for months are the ones that quietly lose their Top 3 spot.
Ranking #4 on Google Maps isn't ranking. It's being invisible with extra steps. — Abhishek Mishra, Founder, NexaFlow
